In Holtz’s book, Winning Every Day, he described how when he saw Chris, a freshman crying deep, gut heaving sobs after their season-ending loss (a season, in which Chris never played a single down), Holtz decided to not only start Chris the next season, but to also build the team with a band of ‘fire-eaters’, who loved this game as much as Chris did. The next season Notre Dame won the National Championship. 
 

Share these special moments with Chris as he made history as part of Notre Dame football’s all-time winning streak with 23 consecutive wins. While playing for the Irish, he compiled an impressive 33-4 record. Of those 37 games, his team went into 21 of those games ranked #1 in the nation. Chris was elected captain of the Fighting Irish football team his senior year, by which time he had also been dubbed “the meanest player in college football” by Sports Illustrated. He won numerous collegiate awards, including consecutive consensus All-American titles (1989 and 1990) & the Lombardi Award (1990).
